Pet Licensing

Pet Licensing in Watson Lake
In Watson Lake, pets are family, whether they keep us company at home, walking beside us on trails, or playing in the yard, they are part of what makes the Town feel like home.
With this, the Town has established a pet licensing system, not just to enforce the rules, but to also help us care for our pets, protect our neighbors and being a stronger and safer Watson Lake for everyone.
Who Needs a License?
If you live in Watson Lake and have a cat or a dog over three months old, they are required to be licensed. This helps us:
• Reunite lost pets with their families
• Confirm that animals are properly cared for
• Reduce stray-animal-related risks and calls
• Support responsible pet ownership
As outlined in By-law 07-08, Section 6, service animals like guide dogs are exempt from license fees.
When do I License My Pet?
Annual Pet Licenses expire on December 31st every year, and must be renewed every year.
If you just welcomed a new pet to your home, you have to register them within 15 days (By-law 07-09)
Neutered or spayed pets are eligible for lifetime licenses if a proof of spay or neuter is presented upon registering.
What You'll Need:
• Your name and contact information
• Your pet's name, breed and description (i.e. it's primary color)
• Proof of spay/neuter (if applying for a lifetime license)
Once your pet is registered, you will receive at Town-issued tag with the pet's license number and year. This tag must be worn by the pet at all times as it is one of the quickest ways to help lost pets find their way home.
By licensing your pet, you are helping to keep pets and people safe, minimize lost-and-found stress, support emergency responders and build a more pet-friendly community.
